Matherville history:
One of the first settlers here was Hopkins Boone, nephew of the famous Daniel Boone. Coal was found in the area which let to much growth. The town was named for George Mather. He was a salesman who gave a discount on materials for the railroad in exchange for the town being named for him. It was incorporated in 1911 as Mather, and later changed to Matherville.
