David Sears was one of the first residents of the area. He built a dam across a channel of the river in 1837 causing a boon for the city in water power. It was this power that first attracted John Deere to the area. The name is based on the French word, Moulin, which basically means mill, chosen for obvious reasons due to the many mills in the area. The city was incorporated in 1848.
