George Haworth was a government agent sent to this area in 1822 to serve as a liaison between the government and the local Native American tribes. After he left in 1829, James A Piatt moved into the cabin he vacated. As more families arrived, the settlement grew. By 1837, so many lived here that they felt Decatur was too far away to go to conduct their business. A group of local men purchased Piatt's property, renamed the community for the home of Thomas Jefferson, Monticello and recorded the plat on 1 July 1837. It was incorporated in 1872 as a city.
