The area was called Upper Yellow Banks by the local Indians. William Denison and his son, John, came here in 1827 and lived among the Indains in peace. Several times, the Indians tried to buy Denison's daughters, but he politely declined the sales. They later tried to kidnap another daughter but were unsuccessful.

This village, the first in Mercer County, was platted in September 1834 by a young man who later became President of the United States, Abraham Lincoln.
