History & History Related Items Northlake history: Northlake was once known as "the City that Confidence built." Here is a history page for Northlake. The name "Northlake" came about by the existence of two of the village's main thoroughfares - North Avenue and Lake Street - which, coming through and out of Chicago, converge at a 45-degree angle at the westernmost limits of the City. Before the US entered World War II, many people came into the area to work at the Buick Defense Plant in Melrose Park. Because so many from Chicago were working at the plant, there became a great need for housing. The area just west of the plant was pastureland which was bought up by Midland Development Company to build houses. The marked the beginning of Northlake. e Return to Index
