In 1917 Rantoul was chosen by the Army Air Service to train pilots for WWI. For the next 75 years Chanute Air Force Base would become the premier technical training school for the USAAF and USAF. At the time of its closure Chanute had trained over 2 million men and women and was the third oldest active military base in the United States. Today the Octave Chanute Aerospace Museum displays and perserves the proud history of America's military most important techinical training schools.
