The villaged was founded on 15 July 1856 and had its beginnings as a coal mining town. It was named for its location at the head of the Rock Island Rapids where the Mississippi turns it's course to east-west for a time. For many years, river travel had to stop at the rapids, but a deeper channel was blasted out in the 1870's to permit traffic going through without impedment.

Death of Milton B. Chase
Rapids City Cemetery
I recently discovered a Civil War Vet and my great-Great Grandfather,
Milton B Chase, who served in Iowa, Illinois and Pennsylvania where he was from Washington Co. PA
He was married to Margaret Edith Franks in 1855 in LeClaire, Iowa, Scott Co., Iowa, just across the river from Rapids City, Illinois. They had 5 children and there are still relatives in the area both in Illinois as well as Iowa.
Margaret E Chase remarried at least twice and may be in the same cemetery, but do not know for certain. I know she was married to George B Nicholson and a Mr. Vincent.
Her children are:
James Morgan Chase
Francis Marion Chase
Milton Parker Chase
Maggie Chase
Jennie Chase
