History & History Related Items

Founders William and August Scharf named the town Sorento after a town in Florida of the same name. They planned to located their Sorento Coal Company here. The area was mainly settled by Scotch-Irish from the North Carolina area. It was first known as Pleasant Prairie from about 1828 until it was named Sorento in 1882. It was incorporated in 1885.
