2001, February 3
Tamaroa Lady Indians Win State Tournament.
See a picture of the Championship team and a roster of the team. At 4:40 p.m. Saturday, the celebration officially began in Waugh Gymnasium at Rend Lake College. The Tamaroa (Grade School) Lady Indians, on the strength of Alicia Mason's (20) free throw with 2.5 seconds remaining, defeated Jefferson Rural School of Metropolis 31-30 in the championship game of the southern Illinois Junior High School Athletic Association (SIJHSAA) Class S Girls State Tournament.

The state title is the first-ever in girls basketball for TGS, finishing its banner season 23-3. Tamaroa won the Boys Class S State crown 25 years ago, the only other state championship in school history.

Mason's (20) free throw sealed the victory, but Becky Majewski (54) and Chelsey Cassity (40) also connected or key baskets in the final minutes as the Indians and Jefferson traded leads. TGS opened a pair of six-point margins during the second half, only to see Jefferson rally. Tamaroa also played comeback basketball, trailing by five in the third period. After Mason's free throw, the Lady Bobcats had on last chance to score. However, a shot from just past the half-line fell short.
