History & History Related Items Urbana history: The first real settler appears to have come in 1822. William Tompkins built a home near Boneyard Creek. Urbana was founded to be the county seat of the new Champaign County in 1833. Though the area was mostly swampy land, and quite inaccessible, it was finally settled and developed. The name probably came from Urbana, Ohio. There is an Urbana, Ohio which is the county seat for a Champaign County there in Ohio. In 1871, great disaster struck with the Great Urbana Fire. On 9 October, most of the downtown area burned down. Interestingly enough, the Great Chicago Fire also started on the same day. Both fires started in stables. Urbana attractions: Return to Index
