History & History Related Items Alexandria history: Here is a history page for Alexandria. Alexandria began as a canal town. Once the railroad took over, the canals were not as needed and Alexandria had somewhat of a hard time until 1887 when natural gas was discovered. The town prospered until the gas began to run out in the early 1900's. Alexandria didn't want to quit and simply changed its focus each time the economy went bad for one reason or another. Many of today's residents are retirees and commuters to jobs in Anderson, Muncie and Indianapolis.
