The area was first settled by the white man around 1830, mingling with the local Native Americans until the 1840s when they were forced out to the west. Beginning in the late 1800s, the lake began to becme a resort area. Many hotels were built and visitors came to enjoy the setting. The railroad also helped to bolster the tourism of the area with many people coming from as far as the Chicago area.
Cedar Lake, itself, is smaller than it was many years ago. Today, it averages about 8-9 feet in depth. It is about 2.1 miles long and a little under a mile wide.
