Known as the Hub City of Lake County, for being the county seat. It was also once,
informally, known as the Marriage Mill of Northwest Indiana for being the first county seat over the state line from Chicago in the days when the state required no blood test for a license. celebrities jumping over the line to get hitched at the old Lake County Courthouse included Rudolph Valentino and Muhammad Ali. Also famous for the old jail from which John Dillinger made his escape with a fake gun made out of wood (said to be untrue by locals).
