History & History Related Items Edwardsport history: The actual first settler of the area was John Hopkins, but he didn't stay very long, only a few years. A surveyor, Edward Wilkes, was sent to lay out the town for Sullivan County. Once he was finished in May 1832, it was decided to name the new town after him. He also stayed and became the first postmaster. It wasn't until after 1845 that business began to thrive in Edwardsport. A grist mill was built as well as a sawmill. When the railroad was completed in 1873, more people came to live in Edwardsport and the area thrived. In 1892, President Benjamin Harrison campaigned for a second term and gave a speech in Edwardsport from the rear of the train he was on. It created quite a stir in the entire area as many came to hear him speak. The first high school was organized in 1896. Students would be able to graduate in three years. Electricity came to Edwardsport in 1917, changing the lives of many. There are two cemeteries where many of the early pioneers are buried; the Edwardsport Town Cemetery and the Edwardsport Odd Fellows Cemetery west of town.
