James Gentry came to west-central Spencer County in 1818. He brought his family here to settle the area. A historical marker near Gentryville commemorates the site of his home. Gentryville is named for this man.

Col. William Jones State Historic Site
Colonel Jones was a merchant and a lieutenant colonel in the Union Army. He was also a good friend of President Abraham Lincoln. The site includes his 1844 restored home and includes 100 acres of forest, an herb garden, hiking trail and a log barn.
