First discovered by Sieur de La Salle around 1680, the area began to be settled by the French after he had explored and made peace with the local Miami Indians. The English came into power here during the French and Indian War. A number of years later, the city was permanently settled.
Goshen is probably named for an early settler who came from Goshen, New York. The name was officially given in 1831, the same time is was named the county seat for Elkhart County.
