Jacob Geiger came to this area after hearing from his father of the great hunting available here. Once he arrived, he was very pleased with the surroundings so decided to stay. Through the financial backing of his father, Frederick Geiger, Jacob purchased 1,920 acres of land in 1837. Once he settled what would later become Huntingburg, he freed his slaves who moved to an area near Huntingburg known as Freedom Settlement. Later, in 1852, he built a home at what is now 6th and Geiger Streets.
