Markle, Indiana Historical Events

1968, May
Storm in Markle
I was driving my truck through Markle on a summer day when I saw a fierce storm headed into Markle. It was a low, fast-moving black storm that was most certainly could be a bad tornado. In Markle there were little children playing in cribs out in the yards and nobody was aware the storm was approaching. I stopped on the edge of town and walked into the general store there and alerted them to the tornado that was approaching them, but they scoffed at me because the sky was clear and blue. It looked to be just another beautiful Indiana day. I asked them to call their Mayor, but they said no. I asked them to call their civil defense warning people but all they did was laugh at me. So I told them, "OK its your town but I am getting out of here because in less than 15 minutes you are going to be blown away by a storm heading right at you." I told them it was moving fast and low over the horizon and they could not see it till it hit them.

The storm did hit them and devastated the small town. That particular storm was a tornado that killed many people making a long trail of destruction and death though upper Indiana. It was summer of 1968.
