Merrillville history:

From Town of Merrillville
The Town has experienced growth and development as far back as the early 19th Century. In 1834, the entire area that was to become Merrillville was the province of the Potawatomi Indians known as McGwinn Village. In approximately 1835, a frontiersman named Jeremiah Wiggins, along with other frontiersman, camped and traded in the area to become known as Wiggins Point. This became a popular stop for wagon trains bound for Chicago and points west thereof. One of the most popular trails that transversed this area was the Sauk Trail (73rd Avenue). The Saul Trail was the main stage route between Chicago and Crown Point. When Wiggins died in 1838, the local settlers decided to rename the area with a more dignified title for the thriving development. The settlers decided upon the name of Centreville for this area. In the 1850's, two brothers named William & Dudley Merrill, settled in the area known as Centreville. Because of Merrill brothers' great impact on the area's early growth, Centreville was renamed Merrillville. Until the Town incorporated, the communities of Merrillville, Rexville, Lottaville, Ainsworth, Turkey Creek, Ross and Deep River were governed under Ross Township. In 1971, the Town incorporated these areas into the current Town of Merrillville boundaries.
The incorporation date of Merrillville: 30 December 1971
