History & History Related Items
Muncie history: The Munsee or Wolf Clan of the Delaware Indians established a tribal town along the White River called Munseetown. It was from this town that the present-day Muncie was named. The County was named for the Delaware tribe. In 1886, natural gas was discovered nearby. With this discovery came many new businesses and industries. For a time, Muncie was the center for both glass and steel manufacturing in the state of Indiana. In 1888, the five Ball Brothers came to Muncie from New York to establish their glass manufacturing company. The Ball Corporation headquarters is still located in Muncie (1999). Several other establishments in Muncie were, in part, made possible through the efforts of the Ball family - Ball Hospital and Ball State University. In 1929, Muncie was described in the "Middletown Study," by Robert S. and Helen M. Lynd. A second study in 1935 was called "Middletown in Transition." The study was continued in 1977 by the University of Virginia and called, "Middletown III." Muncie emerged from these studies as being a typical American city. Ball State University, which opened in 1918 as part of the Indiana State Normal School in Terre Haute, grew tremendously during the 1960's and 1970's and continues to be an important part of the Muncie community environment.
