Henry County, named in honor of Virginia patriot Patrick Henry, was created on December 31, 1821 from the Delaware New Purchase. The county was officially organized June 1, 1822. The county seat is New Castle. Henry County was the birthplace of Wilbur Wright and is the setting for Ross Lockridge's Raintree County. The county has a large agricultural base, with 76% of the land in farms. Most of the livestock is in cattle and in hogs.
The Legend of the Raintree
"Legendary Johnny Appleseed, wandered the midwest carrying among his appleseeds a single, exotic seed ... from a golden raintree. Looking for a place where it would flourish and grow, he planted it somewhere here in Henry County. Legend has it that those who find the raintree discover the realization of all dreams."
