From a local resident:
The correct pronunciation of Arkansas City, Kansas is very important to the
folks in Kansas, as well as the city itself. It is NOT pronounced the way
the state south of Missouri is, "Are-kan-saw City", but rather like the
state of Kansas, as in "Are -kan-sus City". The river that flows through the
state of Kansas is also pronounced this way, as in the "Are-kan-sus River".
I was born in Ark City (an easier way to identify the city) in 1954 and like
to tell others that I was "3 miles away from being an Okie" since Ark City
is just that far away from the Oklahoma state line.
