The Lewis and Clark Expedition came through the area back on 4 July 1804. It was first settled later in July of 1854 when Missourians came and created the second city in Kansas. Atchison became a well-known railroad town, even giving its name to the "Atchison, Topeka and the Santa Fe Railroad" in 1860. Even the the role of the railroad has declined in this country, Atchison has maintained a good lifestyle. Atchison was incorporated as a town on 30 August 1855 and later as a city on 12 Feb 1858.

John J. Ingalls
Also a U.S. Senator from Kansas. He served for three terms in the Senate. A lawyer and author, Mr. Ingalls was the person who suggested the state motto for Kansas.
Edgar Watson Howe
He was the founder of the Atchison Daily Globe. He achieved fame for his best-seller, "The Story of a Country Town." His residence may be seen in Atchison at 1117 North 3rd Street.
John Cameron Swayze
A world-famous radio and television newscaster grew up in Atchison and graduated from high school here.

A Living memorial to aviation and aerospace contributors. See trees from all 50 states and US Territories as well as from around the world. A life-size bronze statue of Amelia Earhart is also on the grounds.
Atchison, the most Haunted Town in Kansas. The town is said to be host to many of the early settlers who chose to stay in Atchison in their ghostly form. Stories abound about sightings and other events here. The Atchison Trolley even has a haunted homes tour as one of its offerings.
