Cottonwood Falls Historical Events
1931, March 31
On March 31, 1931, an airplane carrying Knute
Rockne, legendary Notre Dame football coach, and 8 other persons
crashed in a farm field between Bazaar, Kansas and Cottonwood Falls,
Kansas. The crash of the airplane was reportedly the first crash of a
regularly scheduled commercial plane in the United States (other
commercial mail and passenger carrying planes had crashed, but none on
a fixed schedule carried by an airliner), and led to the formation of
the Federal Aviation Administration.
