Cunningham, Kansas Historical Events

1915, July
Helen Maasen born near Cunningham
Cunningham to Colorado
My mother, Helen Maasen, 2nd child of Ben and Mary Maasen, was born in Cunningham, Kansas in July of 1915. Her family lived in a soddy in the tall grass prairie 3 miles from town and over a mile from the nearest neighbor. She tells of her mother having to search for a lost toddler (my aunt) in the shoulder tall grass while shutting my mom (age one) in the house alone till she could find her. She also tells of her mom killing big rattlesnakes which would crawl in on the hard-packed dirt floor. They eventually finished working on some construction that was going on there and the family moved to Colorado Spring, CO 1n 1922. Mom recalls her dad putting a huge high wooden wagon down into a wide door cellar along with all their toys and some trunks and the family traveling in a much smaller covered wagon for what seemed days to get to a very pretty new white house in that new place with a view of Pikes Peak off the front porch
