In 1867, a railroad water station was built where Ellis is now located. A post office was opened here on 27 June 1870. By 1874 there was a school established and a church. The city became known as a major shipping point for cattle from about 1875 until 1880. The city was incorporated on 10 January 1888. In 1896, the city election gave Ellis an all-woman council and mayor, one of the first cities in the US to do so. The man who invented the electric streetcar in 1882, John Henry, lived in Ellis. Walter P. Chrysler, the founder of the Chrysler Corporation, grew up here and was taught his trade in the Ellis Union Pacific shop.
