1993, July 24 The Great Flood of 1993
The warning came out that the levee may not hold the water back so the whole town was to be evacuated when the Missouri River level reached 30 foot. Well, on July 22, people started leaving and at the time it broke through, there were only a few brave souls left. Soon, they, also, learned it was time to go. Portions of Elwood were under 10 to 14 feet of water. It stretched out over a span of five miles into the next city. A major highway, 36, was shut down. It was said that our City of Elwood was gone for good, but we bounced back! Now, we are referred to as the Survival City. We would really like to be known as the Thrive City soon. The citizens were kept out of Elwood for two weeks before they could see the damage done to their property and lives from this great flood of 1993.
My grandmother was Miss Elwood when she was 16 or 17, she was born in 1918
