Though several families passed through and lived in the area, the founder is thought to be Christian Hoffman, a native Swiss man, who established a gristmill on the Smoky Hill River. As the mill grew, so did the community around it. The City of Enterprise was platted and organized in 1878. Another of the prominent early settlers of Enterprise was Jacob Ehrsam who built up his own profitable business here.

George Elmer Smith was a great man , and he wasn't exactly a nobody either! He was born in Illinois , to a Native American woman , who either abandoned him , or had been taken from her by the government , and placed in a foster home! He searched all his life , to find his natural mother , but died at Abilene Memorial Hospital on December 5 , 1960 , never knowing who his natural mother was!
