History & History Related Items Herington history: Early in Herington history, Father Juan de Padilla came with the Coronado expedition of 1541 hoping to convert the local Indians. He was killed while in the area. A monument was built in the park later named for him. Herington was named for Monroe Davis Herington, the founder of the city. He came to the area after seeing an ad in the Bloomington, Illinois newspaper about land for sale or trade. He visited in 1880 and moved here with his family in 1881. Later, he was instrumental in the railroad coming through Herington. For much more historical information and some pictures, please see this history page. Herington attractions: Tri-County Historical Museum The local Carnegie Library was built in 1918 and is still in use today. Lake Herington and the Herington Reservoir are located just 2.4 miles west of the corner of Broadway and Walnut. Return to Index
