Stewart Rehder in approximately the early 1950's In May of 1856, a small wagon train of 49 persons set out from Milwaukee, Wisconsin to find new land. There were later grouped with General James H. Lane and his two hundred men in Nebraska. Going into Kansas, they came to Elk Creek and built a bridge. Once built, they crossed the bridge and camped in the area of Central School. The small group decided they liked the area. One of the numbers was a civil engineer who began to survey the area. The town was named for Mr. E. Holton, who financed the trip for the group. He later came to Holton with his wife and son in 1880 for a single visit, never returning to "his" town. Holton was first incorporated in 1859 with several other incorporated coming later as the town grew and prospered. See the above history website for more history details. Return to Index
