History & History Related Items Iola history: A number of residents of the area met in January 1859 to talk about developing a new town for a new county seat. Plans were made to survey and plat the street and a large downtown area. They decided to name the new community Iola after Iola Colborn, the daughter of J.F. Colborn who built the first frame house in the area. In only a few years, a number of businesses relocated to the new town and by 1865, Iola was the new county seat of Allen County. The town continued to grow with the population surging and declining due to various factors including a natural gas discovery and its effects on the area.
