The Pottawatomie Indians were granted new lands in the 1846 treaty to which they were to move within two years. By December 1847, nearly all of them had gone from the area. This opened the land to white settlement. The first settlers were Henry, William and Peter Sherman. In 1854, new settlers began to arrive.
