Overland Park was founded in 1905 when William B. Strang, Jr. arrived and platted several communities which he wanted to be "park-like." One of these he named Overland Park. He hoped to have nice neighborhoods, good business, quality education and recreational facilities in the area. The Overland Park area began to grow and also attract business helping to fulfil Strang's dreams. The city was incorporated on 20 May 1960.
