Louisville, Kentucky Historical Events


2003 In 2003, the city of Louisville and Jefferson County were merged into a single consolidated city-county government with the official name of Louisville-Jefferson County Metro Government. The official short form of the name is Louisville Metro. With this change came a large increase in population from 256,231 in 2000 to 700,030 in 2004. This figure does include other incorporated places in the county. The city-county is not the same thing as the Louisville metropolitan area which also includes parts of southern Indiana.

Chewing gum was invented by local resident, John Colgan. He called it Taffy Julie, but he neglected to patent his invention.

1828
The University of Louisville is the oldest city-supported college in the country, founded in 1828.
