Father Stephen Theodore Badin, the first Catholic priest ever ordained
in the USA did the first baptisms in Immaculate Conception Church in
Charenton in 1844. Father Badin was a missionary who evangelized an area from New
York state to Louisiana. His primary focus was in the area around southern
Indiana and Kentucky.
Father Badin was especially interested in the evangelization of Native
Americans which is what brought him to Charenton. Badin sold the land
that became the University of Notre Dame. He sold it to Father Edward Sorin
