History & History Related Items

The land that is now River Ridge was once comprised of several large sugar plantations which lined the Mississippi River. The area remained largely rural until the early 1950s when some growth began to take place. By 1965 most areas along the Mississippi River were developed between Kenner and Harahan. This area was known as Little Farms which was a good description of the land and its history. This was also the official post office name for the area. In 1974, to create more community identity and to ease confusion, the name of the area between Kenner, Harahan and Metairie was renamed River Ridge.
