Monson Center, Massachusetts Historical Events

1900 - 1950's
The Stebbins Family
From the 19th century, the Stebbins Family was a strong presence in the town of Monson. From 1900 to the 1950's, the family held most of the land on the northern road from Monson to Palmer. Noted as Granite Street on many old maps available from the USGS, it was know as Margaret Street from the village to the quarry. All of this land was part of Stebbins Farms, as well as hilly lands further to Palmer on the north west side of the road. Descendants of this family followed my father, Robert Carlton Sherman, to Lakeland, Florida from 1946 to 1950, where dozens of the Stebbins family remain today. At this time, none of the extensive Stebbins holdings in Monson remain in the family. The last large landowner of the Stebbins Family was Elmer Stebbins, whose sister, Hazel, was my grandmother.
