History & History Related Items Chesapeake Beach history: The Chesapeake Beach Railway ran from Washington, D.C. to the beach which came to be named Chesapeake Beach. Thousands came to the shore until the great depression of the 1930’s closed down the railroad. When the Bay Bridge was built in the 1950’s, many former visitors instead went to Ocean City for recreation. Several new attractions have been built as well as a museum, a boardwalk and pier and housing developments. Restaurants, hotels and other businesses are now moving back to the area. In 2003, the area was hit hard by Hurricane Isabel which also devastated North Beach. Electricity was out for about a week and many homes and businesses were ruined. Return to Index
