As were many of the other surroundings towns, Hughesville was a tobacco market town. The old tobacco warehouses are now used for shops and stores. In 2007, a bypass was built to help rush-hour traffic. An Amish community and market are nearby. Due to its central location in the tri-county area, there are many agencies and organizations that headquarter in Hughesville even though the community itself is small.
