English settlers came into this area in 1642 and founded the community of Snow Hill. It is on the Pocomoke River and the port was called a "royal port" by William and Mary of England. The port handled both exports and imports. There was also major ship-building in Snow Hill.
Snow Hill became the county seat of the new Worcester County in 1742. The previous county was Somerset County. The nearby river began to be heavily used as time went on, bringing more business to Snow Hill. There was a great increase of the overnight lodging industry.
The river continued to be a major influence on the economy of Snow Hill for many years.
After the conclusion of the Civil War, the railroad came into the eastern shore. As the railroad grew, river travel decreased. Much of the business which provided Snow Hill's economic base closed up. Alternate industries started to spring up in agriculture providing a new thriving economy.
