White Oak Historical Events

1994
Naval Ordnance Lab closed
When the area around the lab began to grow and develop, it brought homes right up to the fences of the lab. The neighbors weren't bothered too much by the occasional explosions, but, in 1992, a larger than normal explosion caused damage to the homes and nerves of the people in the area. Though it was not the reason the lab was closed, it was a contributing factor. The BRAC (Base Realignment and Closure Report) in 1991 reduced the labs scope and reduced the staff. The same report in 1993 recommended dis-establishment and moving the NAV/SEA from Crystal City, Virginia to White Oak. In the end, NAV/SEA decided to re-locate to a different facility and the GSA took over the site. The site was renamed the Federal Research Center. The Food and Drug Administration is currently housed at the site and making improvements and additions to the facilities. White Oak
