Somerset County was established in 1666 by Cecil Calvert. The county was named for his wife's sister, Lady Mary Somerset. The original boundary of Somerset County went from the bay to the sea and from Virginia to the Nanticoke River, taking in part of what is now southern Delaware. 76 years after it was made, it was divided into two counties - Worcester County and the existing Somerset County. Princess Anne was named the county seat in 1744. In 1867 another division was made when part of Somerset and part of Worcester were carved out to create Wicomico County.
