History & History Related Items Fairfield history: Fairfield became a town in 1788. It was formerly known as Kendall's Mills. The father of modern "blood-less" surgery, Dr. William T. Bovie, developed the self-cauterizing electric scalpel, lived, and did research from his home on Summit Street. MUCH more to be found in article "The House That Has Everything - History, Trout And A Ghout", Waterville Morning Sentinel, pg. 15, Thurs Oct 13, 1977 Fairfield is also mentioned in Ripley's "Believe It Or Not!" as having three bridges on the same road over the same river in a mile. The bridges were very recently replaced (2002) with one very large bridge and the older ones are being removed, there still being three bridges crossing within one mile.
