Machias was settled in 1763. Most of the townspeople earned their livings then from the forests around the town with shipbuilding and lumber. Fishing was also a large portion of the economy.
The first naval battle of the Revolutionary War was fought near Fort O-Brien State Park. A building from that era, the Burnham Tavern, has been maintained and used as a museum today.
