In 1617, Richard Vines and his group wintered here, but it wasn't until 1631 that a permanent settlement was established. The town was on both sides of the river and was first called Saco and the as Biddeford after 1718. The settlement grew slowly with the eastern side of the river finally separating from Biddeford in 1762. They named their new town Pepperrellborough for its founder. The town flourished and grew. By 1805, the long and difficult name was changed to the inital name of Saco. During the 1800's, many factories and mills opened in the Saco and Biddeford area.
