Calumet is the French word for pipe. This was used in reference to the Indian Peace Pipe.
The downtown area of Calumet has many sandstone buildings from the mining era. This part of town is on the National Register of Historic Places.

The Keweenaw Peninsula had the first mineral rush in the USA. The last copper mine in the area closed in 1968. This museum traces the history of mining in this area. Varied exhibits are available.
