Here is a history page for Harbor Beach.

The earliest settlers to this area arrived in 1837 and established a sawmill for processing lumber. The settlement eventually was named Barnettsville In 1855, as the settlement continued to grow, the town was renamed Sand Beach. In 1899, the village of Sand Beach changed its name to Harbor Beach. In 1910, it was officially incorporated into a city.

The Grice House
This home was built by James G. Grice, who came here in the 1860's. 100 years later, the city of Harbor Beach purchased the property. Soon after, a group of local volunteers helped to convert the house and surrounding area into a museum. The complex includes the home, an old schoolhouse and a polebarn. There are over 2000 artifacts in the entire complex, which also exhibits agricultural machinery and implements.

Frank Murphy
Harbor Beach claims Frank Murphy as a famous native son. He was born in 1890 to John T. and mary (Brennen) Murphy. He attended the University of Michigan Law School. After graduating, he returned to the area to practice law with his father and also his brother. Reaching beyond the town, Murphy lists many accomplishments, including: Mayor of Detroit, Governor-General/U.S. High Commissioner of the Philippine Islands, Governor of Michigan, Attorney General of the United States and a U.S. Supreme Court Justice. Murphy's first home in Harbor Beach was both home and law office. Later a larger home was made next door for the family. Now, both buildings are the Murphy museum. Tours and special activities are both available at the museum which is run by dedicated volunteers.
