Founded in 1879 when the Chapin Mine was discovered. This mine is now considered one of the greatest iron minesin the world. Though it closed on 1 August 1932, it produced 27,506,868 tons of iron ore from 1879 until its closure. The mine helped to bring many new residents into the area. Because a large number of the immigrants were Italian, Swedish and Cornish, their traditions and cultures remain and have a place today.
