History & History Related Items St Louis history: The founder of St. Louis is Joseph W. Clapp. He came here in 1853 and built a cabin. The village was platted in 1855 and named Pine River by Mr. Capp and Dr. Crawford. The neighboring village of St. Louis was platted in 1859. They were merged in 1856 as St. Louis. It was incorporated as a village in 1868 and as a city in 1891. Here is a history page for St. Louis. St Louis attractions: There is a sign in city park designating the site as the geographical center of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan. The sign was placed in the park on 17 December 1955. The city motto, Middle of the Mitten, also stems from this designation as the center of things! Return to Index
