Vandalia history:

Vandalia was an important part of the Underground Railroad System. Visitors to the village will find a memorial plaque concerning the underground railroad. Just south of Vandalia lies Paradise Lake which at one time was a fairly well known resort area for African Americans from Chicago. During its heyday in the 50 and 60's it rivaled Idlewild, Mi. for its beauty and elegance, featuring a pleasant motel and large bar with live entertainment.
